OK, that was awesome!! Special thanks to the 8,000 or so crazy winter-souls who braved frigid temps and big fluffy snowflakes to stick it out and see us rock Vail last Saturday night. This show was such a blast from the get-go, surrounded by snow-peaked mountains and good, good vibes. The Ski conditions were great, for a rock and roll show! All through the night, our crew had to sweep snow drifts off the stage, not unlike our Ice Palace performance at the 2004 NHL All Star Game in St. Paul, MN. Kevin made a snow angel on the stage, and Ed had a Sno-Hawk going on. I guess we're the go-to band for performing in adverse conditions. Maybe this was training for the Whistler Olympic Show or just a case of "you guys are Canadian, you can handle it!!" Whatever it was, it was a total blast, and the good people of Vail made us feel incredibly welcome. Ed's side project, Yukon Kornelius, put on amazing show show the night before BNL's. Dee Snider from Twisted Sister was truly incredible to behold as he massacred Christmas trees and bellowed the metal hits to 3,000 stoked attendees. Special shout out to Chef Armando Navarro and the amazing staff at Larkspur restaurant for the best BNL band meal of 2009, as well. If you go to Vail, you absolutely have to eat at Larkspur - it's friggin' outstanding. All in all, it was a beautiful weekend in Vail - I think we'll be back!

This is 24 Hrs late, but courtesy of the fabulous Jimmy Shaw, I had my socks blown off last night at Massey Hall in Toronto. METRIC were absolutely on fire as they burned through a tight set of angular and catchy songs, mostly from their latest album - Fantasies. I've seen this band grow and develop over the years, and have always been blown away by Emily's stage presence and the ridiculously tight rhythm section of Jules on drums and Joshua on bass. Joules is one of the most inventive drummers out there, with propulsive, funky beats almost always highlighted by off-beat hi-hats and cool accents. I always felt that METRIC are a stellar live band, but it's so great to see them perform what are easily the best songs of their career so far. Fantasies is full of incredibly rich songs, both lyrically and melodically. Two songs for me are battling it out for the fictional Pop Song Bridge Of The Year Award - Twilight Galaxy and Collect Call. Both we're performed immaculately last night, with Emily in great voice, moving through the slippery bridges with confident panache. What more can I say - I love Metric - and I urge you all to check out Fantasies. Big thanks again to Jimmy and the Band for an amazing night.
Yes we're still chomping at the bit over here at BNL headquarters. We're putting the finishing touches on the new CD, and we're looking at a very early 2010 release. Sorry for the delay, again, but we want to make sure everything is just right for the re-launch of this 20 year-old rock and roll ensemble. Here's Ed to tell you a bit more, and a sneak peak at our recent rehearsals. Thanks for stickin' with us, Peeps.
Holy Crap - that's finally it! After 19 days of work shopping and arranging and 37 days of recording, we're finished the heavy lifting on this, the 12th Studio Album from Barenaked Ladies. It's been both challenging and incredibly rewarding over the past three and a half months. We've undertaken our first recording as a 4pc, changed up our management, and we even got out to play a bunch of rock shows for y'all. As of today, the super-genius Mix God who is Bob Clearmountain has completed 12 songs out of the 18 we recorded and we absolutely love the way they're sounding. It's actually kind of Bittersweet right now, as we wrap up things at Jimmy C's and get ready for a few weeks of R&R ('cept Kev, who never stops). I'll miss the collaboration and the joyous unity of these sessions.
I'll also miss cooking for my band and MPW, Keith and Kenny - our awesome assistant engineer. I kinda approached the last few meals of Tychow like they were feasts of accomplishment. Yesterday was slow - smoked BBQ Brisket with sides of Tangy Pit beans, Braised Collard Greens, and Crunchy 'slaw. Wednesday I did Tandoori BBQ's Chicken with Turmeric Rice, Gently Stewed Beets and Spinach with Ginger and Green Chillies. I think we may have started a tradition with this cooking thing. It's great to have everyone around the table, enjoying home-made food after toiling in the Music Mine all day!
What sweet slavery though, cause this has been the best workplace environment ever for this band. Uncle Tyler highly recommends doing a job you love, with dynamic and exciting people who are committed to each other and to creating great things. That's what this process has been like and as my main man George Gershwin once said, It's nice work if you can get it...
Though all that work sure made me tired:
Hey Y'all,
Uncle Tyler here with a little re-assurance. We want everyone to know that we are definitely planning a big tour in and around the release of our kick-ass new album. We'll get to as many of you as possible, we promise. The recent Festival Shows and the September and October casino gigs are ones we'd booked back in the spring, before the multitude of amazing and positive developments led us to where we are now: Namely, sitting on an incredibly exciting new batch of songs and heading off in a great new direction with Cam8 Management. You've stuck with us through the past year and all the ups and downs, so we're asking for a little more patience as we plan out the next phase for this little pop-rock orchestra. We thank everyone who has travelled far and wide this summer to see us rock the 4-piece science. We had a ton of fun at the gigs, and we feel so energized with each and every show we play. We really can't wait - but we have to, for a little while. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your summer and know that autumn will arrive with a brand new soundtrack by your Barenaked Ladies.
.
When I first joined Barenaked Ladies in 1990, we had a residency at a Toronto Club called Ultrasound Showbar. It's long gone, but we remember it here.
One of the hardest parts of recording for the drummer is the over-dub process. All the drums are done and, aside from the occasional tambourine or shaker, there's not much else to do. Luckily, two factors contributed to me having more to do this time around. First of all, I get to sing a little more these days and I'm loving it! Secondly, JIM BOUGHT A BIG GREEN EGG so I became the session Chef! It was great to cook for my boys while we polished up the tunes. Maybe I should do it on the road?? Special shout out to the Lempka Family in Chicago who totally hooked me up with a box of delicious rubs and spices at the Taste of Chicago. You can bet they'll be put to good use this summer and beyond. Bon Apetit, my Peoples.
Thanks for a great night, Milwaukee. Our Summerfest show totally rocked because of you. There really is nothing like playing outside in the summer - even if it's under a giant expressway! We played three new ones last night: How Long, Summertime, and Another Heartbreak - all of which you seemed to enjoy, based on the reception, and the feedback we got at the signing after the show. I particularly enjoyed Kevin's random lyrics in IIHAMD, and the awesome rock and roll, above-head-claps during the vocal breakdown in Wind It Up. A very invigorating night for BNL. Summerfest, you do indeed Rock. Next up Muskegeon MI. Bring on the M's!
OK - I guess Ed was serious about finding someone else. Looks like he decided on an all Hi-Hat approach from now on. Revolutionary...
It's so nice to have a fancy new way to communicate with y'all! Special thanks to Mace and Thales and Nettwerk for putting this together.
If you've been following our studio updates www.twitter.com/barenakedladies you already know that we're in the home stretch of recording the new Barenaked Ladies album. Just a few more backing vocals and some shakes and quakes and we'll be ready to mix dis ting with the legendary Bob Clearmountain.
Recent live highlights have been The Family Day show we did at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa - where we rocked for over 2000 returning soldiers and their happy families. This was a cool gig cause we got to fly on a giant C-130 Hercules. They even put seats in it for us! We also rocked Muskoka Ontario for the benefit of The Canadian Women's Olympic Hockey Team. Special thanks to all of you who made the trip up North to be with us. You guys always amaze us with your willingness to travel all over the planet to see us rock.
Coming up we have gigs in, Milwaukee, Muskegon, and Chicago. Special thanks to the Windy City for breaking up our string of M-town shows!
I've been cooking for the boys during this last phase of the recording. Today I made grilled Fish sandwiches with Coleslaw and 7 grain salad. For dinner it was smoked Pork Chops with sides of Sauteed Kale with Mushrooms and Onion and Roasted Rosemary Potatoes. Ed told me, through a mouthful of Orange Roughy, that I'm catering the whole next album. "But I want to play drums too!" I replied. "Anyone can play drums - we need you to cook!" was his sarcastic retort. I guess if Bun E. Carlos can drive Cheap Trick's bus AND drive the drumkit, then I might be able to fill BNL's gullets while filling the end of 4 bar phrases. Renaissance men, Bun E. and I....
