Los Angeles, CA (January 30, 2023)Barenaked Ladies are at it again as they announce their 7th almost-annual, expansive Last Summer on Earth 2023 American Tour.

Continuing the trend that they began a little more than a decade ago, the Toronto-based eight-time JUNO winners and two-time Grammy nominees are eager to hit the road this summer, playing three dozen shows in major venues all over the United States beginning June 2.

This summer, headliners Barenaked Ladies shake things up a bit by having not one, but two direct support acts, with American bands Semisonic (June 2–June 26) and Five for Fighting (June 28–July 22) splitting the shows. Scottish rockers Del Amitri will open all the shows.

Barenaked Ladies launched their Last Summer on Earth tours in 2012, the year the ancient Mayan calendar had predicted Earth would cease to be. Naturally, BNL seized the opportunity to have a little fun with the idea, and they wound up having so much fun that they’ve repeated the tour seven of the last 12 summers.

On their previous Last Summer on Earth tours — a phrase so fraught with irony that it fully befits this band of clever, scholarly rockers — Barenaked Ladies have enjoyed inviting friends along for the ride. Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket warmed up the crowds last summer, and Cracker, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler, Guster, Ben Folds Five, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay, OMD, Howard Jones, Better Than Ezra, and KT Tunstall have all gone out with BNL on previous Last Summer on Earth tours.

And now, in the summer of 2023, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees, the band who taught us the value of a million dollars, who explained The Big Bang in under two minutes, and who made us say “underwear”, will bring their show full of hits and fan favorites to American audiences.

Premium seats, merch packages, pre-show soundcheck parties, meet-and-greets, and more will highlight a variety of VIP packages for Barenaked Ladies’ Last Summer on Earth 2023 American Tour.

Barenaked Bytes is the free, official Barenaked Ladies app, and it is where you’ll find BNL news, information, and merch, and, with the purchase of a Barenaked Bytes bundle, first access to tickets and VIP packages starting January 31st at 10am local time. The Bytes bundle will also contain an exclusive BNL t-shirt, which will only be available via the app. Barenaked Bytes is available at the App Store and Google Play. It’s free to download and use:  https://www.barenakedbytes.app/  In-app purchases available.

For Last Summer on Earth 2023, Barenaked Ladies are once again happy to tour in the most sustainable way possible with the help of their partner, REVERB. Since 2004, Barenaked Ladies have proudly partnered with REVERB to reduce the environmental impact of touring, giving back to local communities across the US and Canada in the process.

BARENAKED FOR THE HOLIDAYS (DELUXE EDITION) OUT NOVEMBER 11, 2022

Today, multi-platinum band Barenaked Ladies announce Barenaked for the Holidays (Deluxe Edition) – featuring nine bonus tracks – will be released digitally on November 11, 2022 on Raisin’ Records. The popular holiday-themed collection achieved GOLD certification in Canada and hit the Top 100 U.S. Billboard album chart, when it was first released in 2004. The album includes seven original songs, alongside faithful and modern interpretations of traditional Christmas and Hanukkah songs, steeped with the musicianship and sense of humour the band is known for. Highlights include “Green Christmas” notably written for the blockbuster Ron Howard film Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), the heartwarming “Snowman”, which Rolling Stone calls, “a tender original”, Jim Creeggan’s jazzy “Christmas Pics”, and Kevin Hearn’s nostalgic “Christmastime (Oh Yeah)”, which is “pretty and understated”, according to PopMatters.  Sarah McLachlan is featured on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / We Three Kings”, while Michel Bublé appears on the original track, “Elf’s Lament”.

“Tapping into their inner child, the Barenaked Ladies make the holidays fun again,

even if you’re not the kid you used to be.” – Rolling Stone Magazine

The new digital-exclusive Deluxe Edition adds nine additional songs, all recorded live off the floor at Toronto’s Noble Street studios during BNL’s December 2020 Holiday special, A Very Virtual Christmas.  Seven of the bonus tracks are live versions of songs from Barenaked for the Holidays, including special guest Sarah McLachlan, who reprises her feature on the traditional holiday songs. Also included are new tracks “Feliz Navidad” a send-up of the Jose Feliciano classic, and “Santa Sabbath (Xmas Metal-y)”, a medley of three traditional Christmas songs sung to the tune of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath – which features Ed Robertson on drums and drummer Tyler Stewart on lead vocals.

Toronto’s famed multi-platinum foursome Barenaked Ladies are hitting the road this summer with “Last Summer on Earth,” a 36-date North American tour with Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Starting in St. Augustine, Florida on June 3, the tour had been rescheduled due to the pandemic and gives BNL the opportunity to showcase its 16th studio album Detour de Force, released in July 2021. The tour wraps up in the band’s hometown of Toronto on July 21.

“What a pleasure it is to be getting back to live music” stated lead singer Ed Roberston. “We’re so grateful to everybody who’s stuck with this tour being rescheduled multiple times. We can’t wait to get out and play for you! We’re ready to rock…and we suspect you are too!”

“We Barenaked Ladies are really looking forward to rocking out with our friends Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket on the Last Summer on Earth Tour 2022,” added drummer Tyler Stewart. “Don’t miss it, we can’t wait to see y’all out there dancing, singing and partying again. Let’s go Summer, get here quick!!”

This will be the 6th edition of the tour, founded by the band in 2012 – the year that the Mayan calendar predicted would be the last, hence the “Last Summer On Earth”. Barenaked Ladies headline and bring some of their best friends and favorite bands along for a summer of good times, and of course, great music. Past acts include Cracker, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler, Guster, Ben Folds Five, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay, OMD, Howard Jones, Better Than Ezra, and KT Tunstall.

The band recently returned from their successful UK tour, which culminated in a sold out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Louder Than War stated: “BNL have kept crowds coming back due to their sharp, sensitive pop and thrilling, fun live shows.” The audio from that show was recorded and several songs are due to be released next month.

Detour de Force, produced by Juno and Grammy award winners Eric Ratz and Mark Howard, is the band’s broadest reaching and most diverse album to date, fusing the distinct writing voices of Ed Robertson, Kevin Hearn, and Jim Creeggan into a cohesive work. Its 14 tracks include the sonically adventurous “Flip”, the hopeful and infectious “Good Life” (its video features the band playfully navigating their beloved hometown of Toronto), and “New Disaster” (a clever, sardonic comment on our times with an animated, comic book-style video). The album’s stylistic voyage moves from the uptempo fun of “Flat Earth” and country-flavored “Roll Out” to the gentle melodies of “Live Well,” “The National Park,” “God Forbid,” “Man Made Lake” and the sonic roller-coaster of the closer, “Internal Dynamo.” Consequence of Sound described the album as “playful in its structure and crowd-ready hooks while thematically addressing the human condition with acuity.”

The long road to Detour de Force began in early 2020, when BNL convened at Ed Robertson’s lakeside cottage north of Toronto with producer Mark Howard. Inspired by the Fake Nudes Naked acoustic remake of BNL’s last studio album, the idea was “to close ourselves off from the rest of the world,” according to Robertson, “and have no distractions and really capture the sound of a band making music together.” Songs were prepared in the basement rec room and recorded in a make-shift studio in the living room during a productive five weeks. Then, the pandemic hit, which allowed the band to spend time with the songs. After several months, they moved to Noble Street Studios in Toronto and worked with Eric Ratz (Arkells, Big Wreck, Billy Talent) to reimagine the direction of the record.

In addition to making music, BNL have long been active participants in the environmental movement. They are part of REVERB’s Music Climate Revolution, alongside fellow artists, music industry leaders, and fans, with a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint and use their voices to demand climate action.

Over the course of 33 years, the beloved quartet has sold 15 million records worldwide and built up an arsenal of hits including “If I Had $1,000,000,” “One Week,” “Pinch Me,” and “Big Bang Theory Theme.” Widely acknowledged as one of the best live acts on the planet, BNL has hosted a cruise, had its own ice cream flavor, amassed two Grammy nominations, eight Juno Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. The band recently wrote and recorded “Landed on My Head”, the end title song for HBO’s Super Bob Einstein Movie. As Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Tyler Stewart, and Kevin Hearn put it on “Good Life,” “Wasn’t easy but it turned out alright/Wouldn’t trade it for another…You don’t wanna miss this mutha.”

Detour de Force Track List: 01: “Flip”

Detour de Force OUT NOW

(July 16, 2021 – Toronto, ON) Today, multi-platinum band Barenaked Ladies release their 16th studio album Detour de Force. The eagerly awaited album was produced by JUNO and Grammy award winner Eric Ratz and Mark Howard, and features 14 newly minted tracks including the hopeful and infectious new single “Good Life”. Detour de Force is available on CD and digital formats, along with a limited edition blue double vinyl featuring a bonus track. Stream / purchase Detour de Force HERE. Due to manufacturing and shipping delays related to COVID-19, the in-store date for vinyl for the US has been delayed until August 20th.

The music video for “Good Life” also premieres today. Directed by Edward Pond, the video features the band playfully navigating their beloved hometown of Toronto. “This song is the story of the band and how I feel about the band,” says Ed Robertson. “I’m not living the dream, I’m re-living the dream. I lived the dream twenty years ago; the real dream is that I’m still doing this.” Watch the official video for “Good Life” HERE.

Ed Robertson will be featured on an episode of STROMBO today at 5:00pm ET on Apple Music and the band will be participating in the Twitter Listening Party hosted by Tim Burgess on Monday, July 19th at 2:00pm ET.

Detour de Force is BNL’s most broad-reaching and diverse album to date — fusing the distinct writing voices of Robertson, Hearn and Creeggan into a cohesive work. “Our band is very diverse in what we do,” says Robertson, “and on this record I really enjoyed the exploration. This record is a journey. Taking off one song would tip it in a way we didn’t feel was representative of the record we made. We wanted everything that’s here to be part of the record.”

Adds Tyler Stewart, “This is some of our strongest material in 30 years, easily. I think it stands up there with our best albums. It hangs with ‘Gordon,’ or it hangs with ‘Maroon.’”

BNL wasn’t dormant as the world shut down but the pause brought a fresh perspective to where the band wanted Detour de Force to go. “The pandemic really affected the album in an interesting way,” recalls Jim Creeggan, who penned a pair of the Detour de Force songs. “I was getting calls from friends to do remote-based stuff, people asking each other to add something to those projects. So we started reaching out and bringing other things into what we were doing.”

“We took several detours de force,” acknowledges Kevin Hearn, “but I think what you get is a beautiful hybrid of a live off-the-floor band, all the way to full-on production numbers.’ It’s kind of reminiscent of ‘Stunt’.”

“There was a lot that was amazing about recording at the cottage,” recalls Robertson, who wrote songs on his own and with friends Kevin Griffin, Craig Wiseman, Danny Michel and Donovan Woods. “The focus was great. The vibe was great. The hang was great. It was super positive for the band dynamic.”  “It’s a surreal experience to write with someone whose songs you’ve known and admired for what feels like your whole life,” says Donovan Woods about writing with Robertson. “(Ed) and I sat for hours talking about ideas. We ended up with two songs I love so much (“Man Made Lake” and “God Forbid”) that I had to record them, too. Hearing BNL’s versions was another surreal moment. It’s an honor to have a small credit in such an amazing catalogue.”

Barenaked Ladies announce new album Detour de Force out July 16, 2021

Today, multi-platinum band Barenaked Ladies announce their 16th studio album Detour de Force will be released on July 16, 2021. Produced by JUNO and Grammy award winner Eric Ratz and Mark Howard, the eagerly awaited album features 14 newly minted tracks including “Flip”, the buoyant and sonically adventurous debut single and BNL’s first new music in four years. Detour de Force is available to pre-order starting today HERE and is available on CD and digital formats, along with a limited edition blue double vinyl featuring a bonus track. See below for a full tracklist.

Along with the announcement, the band has released a driving, and topical pop-rock gem titled “New Disaster”. Says Ed Robertson, “’New Disaster’ is about the distraction of modern politics coupled with the pressures of the 24-hour news cycle. It seemed like the Nostradamus predictions of new disasters were getting worse and worse, even after we recorded the song.” The official music video for will be released on June 11.

Detour de Force is BNL at its most ambitious, accomplished, intricate, intentional — and, in some ways, circumstantial. Its gestation was long and exacerbated (as so many things have been) by the global pandemic. The good news is that it’s BNL’s most broad-reaching and diverse work to date — fusing the distinct writing voices of Robertson, Hearn and Creeggan into a cohesive work from the stand-out tracks “Flip”, “New Disaster”, and “Good Life”, to the uptempo fun of “Flat Earth”, the playful and country-flavoured “Roll Out” to the gentle melodics of “Live Well”, “The National Park”, “God Forbid” and “Man Made Lake” to the sonic roller coaster of the album-closing “Internal Dynamo”.

The depth goes beyond sonics throughout the album. Though there’s certainly the verbal playfulness and whimsy that’s part of BNL’s stock in trade, many of the songs have a reflective and philosophical, sometimes topical, underpinning that’s also long been part of the BNL makeup.

“We’ve always liked that our band is very diverse in what we do,” says Robertson, “and on this record I really enjoyed the exploration.

It hangs with ‘Gordon,’ or it hangs with ‘Maroon.’

BNL wasn’t dormant as the world shut down — evidence the group’s spirited “Selfie Cam Jam” series and Robertson’s weekly Friday livestreams online, both for charity, as well as a pair of virtual concerts. But the pause brought a fresh perspective to where the band wanted Detour de Force to go.

“There was a lot that was amazing about recording at the cottage,” recalls Robertson, who wrote songs on his own and with friends Kevin Griffin, Craig Wiseman, Donovan Woods and Danny Michel. “The focus was great. The vibe was great. The hang was great. It was super positive for the band dynamic.”  Virtual guests were also invited, including original BNL keyboardist Andy Creeggan (Jim’s brother), all-star singer and bassist Fernando Saunders and MOOG bass pedals borrowed from Rush’s Geddy Lee even make an appearance.

Filmed and edited by Edward Pond, the band has released a Detour de Force teaser that captures the making of the album – from the snowy cold of northern Ontario in a make-shift recording studio in Robertson’s living room with Mark Howard, completing the album with the inimitable Eric Ratz at Noble Street Studios in Toronto.
